To Infinity And Beyond
At this Uruguayan holiday retreat, the apparently lipless lap pool seems to merge with the majestic lake beneath. The panorama can be enjoyed, caipirinha in hand, from the newly built house above - modern in style, Palladian in spirit - that Thomas Gibson conceived with his wife, Anthea, before her untimely death. As the art dealer writes here, it's a fitting memorial to her brilliance as a landscape designer. Photography: Ricardo Labougle
Cogs In The Wheel
Dotted with rare bicycles and limited-edition motorbikes, the Manhattan office of Michael Maharam's family textile empire is a monoculture in the Swiss or Japanese mould, where a clutter-free physical space spurs creative discipline. No personal knickknacks for the employees, then, but when you're surrounded by original Donald Judds, Jean Prouvés, Charlotte Perriands and so on, who cares? says Carol Prisant. Flower Arrangement
When fabric doyen Pierre Frey and artist Jean-Denis Malclès met in the 1940s, a prolific partnership ensued. With wartime engendering a craving for colour, exuberance and fantasy in the decorative arts, the floriferous designs Malclès created for textiles and wallpapers were a sight for sore eyes, as Marie-France Boyer reports.
